SUPPLICATORY CANON TO THE PARAMYTHIA ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD ... A poem by St. Gerasimos of Little Anne's Skete

Ode I.

Irmos.  After crossing the sea as if it were dry ground and escaping the wickedness of Egypt, the Israelite cried out:  Let us sing to our redeemer and God.

O fountain of divine compassion and consolationO Virgin full of grace!  Receive our cries and entreaties and rescue us from manifold afflictions.

O Queen of all angels and menour salvation and refuge and consolationO Mother of God!  Console us in every affliction.

Having been rescued long ago from invasion, pure Mother of God, we cry out to you with all our heart:  from every looming threat, our Consolation, rescue us.

Having incorruptly borne the Creator, O Virgin full of grace and ever-virgin Mary, keep this monastery of yours unharmed by dangers without and the corruption of passions within.

Ode III

Irmos.  You covered the vault of the sky with a roof, O Lord, and built the church; confirm me in your love, O summit of desires, support of the faithful and only clement Lord.

O Virgin, by your attentive care always guide to the path of repentance and to the divine life those who faithfully take refuge in your venerable icon and glorify you, for you are our consolation.

Overwhelmed by a multitude of sins, I have fallen, and though I am despondent I faithfully cry to you:  Lead me up from the abyss of deception, as you are our help, pure Virgin.

Your cheerful countenance is full of divine sympathy and looks down on us in your icon, wherefore we cry to you:  grant  consolation to us, your servants, and rescue us from dangers.

From a violent attack of pirates you long ago saved your monastery of Vatopaidi; but also preserve, our Consolation, this holy flock of yours from every anxiety.

O our Consolation and Mother of God, preserve those who faithfully have recourse to your icon from every painful, difficult situation.

Tone 2.  Fervent protection.

Your exceedingly precious icon, our fountain of blessings, has been dedicated to your help, O Virgin, and it pours forth consolation and salvation of souls and mercy for those who run to it in fervent faith and offer you divine praise.

Ode IV
Irmos.  I have heard, O Lord, the mystery of your dispensation; I have meditated on your works and glorified your divinity.

Be the sacred solace of your monastery, which is dedicated to you, as you are the consolation of the faithful and their support, O Virgin who is hymned by all.

Your all-honorable icon, in which your sweet countenance is seen, has become a mystical sanctuary for this monastery of yours, our Lady.

We magnify, immaculate Virgin, your great providence concerning us; for you give your abundant consolation to your suppliants.

From all anguish and attack of dangers and afflictions, guard us and keep us above them, highly favored Virgin and Mother of God.

Ode V
Irmos.  Illumine us with your commandments, O Lord, and by your lofty arm grant us your peace, O merciful God.

O Mother of God, you are truly the safe shelter of your divine monastery in Rhodes; therefore everyone runs to you.

Your holy icon like a brilliant light spreads out the glories of the wealth of your kindness in Rhodes, Mother of God.

Ever fulfil sympathetically our requests as our true consolation, defender and protection, O Mother of God.

O pure Virgin, sympathetically look from above on the Rhodians who reverently fall before you and honor your icon, O Mother of God.

Ode VI

Irmos.  I will pour out my supplication to the Lord and to him will I declare my afflictions, for my soul has been filled with troubles and my life has approached Hades, so like Jonah I pray:  Raise me up from death, O God.

The abbot of the monastery fulfilled the instruction of your words, Maiden, and averted its looming destruction.  Wherefore also now remove far from us, our Consolation, every deceptive attack of our terrible enemy.

Your divine icon pours forth streams of miracles, consoling Virgin, and pours water on the hearts of the reverent Rhodians unto salvific fruitfulness; wherefore we take refuge faithfully in your divine monastery, Mother of God.

The monastery of Vatopaidi has been wonderfully protected by your voice, O Virgin from the destructive attack of pirates; but even now deliver from every misfortune your monastery in Rhodes, whose boast is the invocation of your name in faith.

The faithful approaching with affection your holy temple, O Mother of God, receive consolation and divine mercy and healing of passions and they sing a hymn of thanksgiving to your great kindness.

O Consolation, Virgin, Mother of God!  Preserve those who faithfully take refuge in your icon from every painful misfortune.

Tone 2.  By the streams of your blood.

O refuge and warm consolation, possessing your wondrous providence, we call you our consolation, O Lady, for you console us in our afflictions; wherefore we proclaim your glory.

Prosomoion.  Tone 6.  Having placed all hope.

Ever-virgin Mother of the Creator of allall-holy and pure Ladygreat consolationpreservation of mortals!  Cause the commotion of temptations and misfortunes and of every affliction to abate.  Provide consolation and healing to all our souls in your inexhaustible kindness.  For because of your acts, pure Virgin, the faithful reverently call you our consolation, singing hymns to you.

Ode VII

Irmos.  The youths from Judea, having come to Babylon of old, by their faith in the Trinity trampled down the flame of the furnace, chanting, O God of our fathers, blessed are you.

Having heard your divine voice, Maiden, the abbot was amazed; having seen your form, which was full of pity, he reverently called to you:  Our Consolation, you are the virgin Mother of God.

By the spiritual cultivation of your fervent providence for your flock, we gather the fruits of your divine consolation and compassion, crying, Rejoice, pure Virgin, our protection.

By your attentive care, our pure consolation and Virgin Mother of God, guide to the path of the commandments of the Savior those who cry to you in faith:  O God of our fathers, blessed are you.

With a sprinkling of divine dew of your fervent mediations, our pure Consolation, quench the coals of the unclean passions of those who faithfully cry to you:  Hail, pure Virgin, blessed above all.

Ode VIII

Irmos.  The king of Heaven whom the hosts of angels hymn, hymn and exalt him above all forever.

Glory of the angels and consoling Virgin, console the hearts of those who exalt exceedingly your unutterable Son.

O Maiden and Consolation, ever be the shelter, fortress and waveless haven of this monastery, which honors you with affection.

Our Consolation, heal all who fall before your divine icon of the passions, diseases of body and sicknesses of heart.

We draw the greatest grace from your immaculate image, O Maiden and Consolation, when we fall before your venerable icon.

Ode IX

Irmos.  O Mother of God, we who have been saved through you fittingly confess you, and with the incorporeal choirs magnify you, O pure Virgin.O fiery throne of the king of all and inexhaustible well of compassion, O Virgin and Consolation, you preserve us.

We importune you to crush the very crafty serpent who creeps treacherously towards your flock, O Virgin and Consolation.

Be the champion and shelter for your monastery which looks to you unceasingly for your mediation, for you, O Virgin, are our consolation and our guardian.

We praise in song your power and protection, our Consolation and all-hymned Virgin, because you attend to us affectionately and ever save us.
